LGBT Peer Mentoring

LGBT Peer Mentoring Program

The LGBT Peer Mentoring Program is meant to connect LGBT students who are new to Rhodes or to the LGBT community with LGBT peer mentors who can provide support and guidance. Mentors help students make connections within the LGBT community at Rhodes and in the broader Memphis community.

Peer Mentors:

• Share their experiences of identifying at Rhodes as an LGBT individual
• Act as a role model for LGBT mentees
• Serve as a listening ear for the mentee
• Provide information about programs and resources that are available for LGBT students
• Check in periodically with mentees to offer support as issues arise

Mentees:

• Share their experiences, including challenges, with LGBT peer mentors
• Seek out their LGBT peer mentor when challenges or difficulties arise
• Explore ways to make community connections

Structure:

While there are group meetings, the program is structured to make it as easy as possible for mentors and mentees to structure meetings that fit their own schedules.

• 2 hour training/orientation session (Mentors only)
• Monthly group check-ins (Mentors only)
• A gathering of all of the mentors and mentees at the beginning and end of each semester
• 3 (minimum) 1-hour meetings between the mentor/mentee each semester, scheduled between the mentor/mentee at their convenience
• Regular email or phone check-ins between the mentor and mentee

Applications:
If you are interested in being a mentor or a mentee, please return an application (click link below) to Charles Frame (framec@rhodes.edu or campus mail). Applications are accepted throughout the year, and new mentoring assignments will be made at the beginning of each semester. Applications for Fall 2012 are due:
• For Mentors on Wednesday, August 22 (8/22) by 5pm
• For Mentees on Wednesday, August 29 (8/29) by 5pm

Confidentiality:
Participation in the mentoring program is confidential. Names of participants are not shared outside the program organizers. Personal information shared within the mentoring relationship is not to be shared by the LGBT mentor with others outside of the LGBT Peer Mentoring Program Organizers as part of support or guidance when issues arise that need to be addressed.

Contact Charles Frame (framec@rhodes.edu) with questions or concerns.
